Renewable Energy At The HUB

The solar panels will produce 18.99 MWh each year, which is equivalent to the reduction of 390 tonnes of greenhouse gases and the expected savings of $83 000 over it's 25+ year lifespan.

Solar @ the HUB

Over the Summer of 2018, the Saint John Community Loan Fund partnered with NexGen Energy (now called  The Smart Energy Company)  Saint John Learning Exchange, and Hemmings House for an innovative solar energy project at the HUB. With funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation (ESIC), we were able to install 60 solar panels on the roof of the HUB.

During the project, youth from local employment and educational programs were able to be hands-on with the project and learn about renewable energy in the process. The project was captured and the story told by Hemmings House in the video below. The installation will continue to serve as an educational tool for all interested individuals.

The Creation of the Social Enterprise HUB

While renovating our first property, 133 Prince Edward St., It became clear that we could leverage much more by purchasing vacant lots next to us and constructing a building that could accommodate more enterprising organizations.  We bought the lots, and began designing what would become the Social Enterprise Hub.

Construction began in November 2015 and was completed in November 2016. The Hub, is a three story building at 139 Prince Edward St. with approximately 15,000 square feet of space.  The HUB brings together enterprising non-profits, social enterprises, and micro-enterprises, all working to scale enterprise and innovation to build inclusive communities and reduce poverty.

Together we have begun to develop a collaborative culture that includes space sharing, equipment sharing, event development and hosting, as well as staff sharing and joint venturing on enterprises and new project proposals. Below are photos of the construction.
